Northwest Nebraska childhood programs receive grant
A new grant from the Nebraska Department of Education is helping provide quality educational programs for 3- and 4-year-old children in northwest Nebraska.
The Highway 20 Early Childhood Care and Education project is using the funds to establish or maintain early childhood education programs in Chadron, Crawford, Hay Springs and Rushville. In most cases, the projects expand upon existing pre-kindergarten programs that have been funded with district, federal or state money, including Head Start. Each program will receive funding for up to one-half of its operating budget on an continuing annual basis.
Dr. Kim Madsen, director of the Chadron State College Child Development Center, said the Highway 20 programs will follow a number of research-based guidelines that help ensure quality. All children who meet the age requirements will be considered for enrollment regardless of income status.
