Economic development meeting at CSC

Published:

The director of the Center for Regional Development at Bowling Green University in Ohio, Dr. Michael Carroll, will be speaking on “Cluster-Based Economic Development” at noon on Friday, March 24 in the Scottsbluff Room of the Student Center. The program will be open to the public without charge. A light lunch will be available to those who contact the CSC Conferencing Office at 432-6380.

Carroll has an extensive background in conducting studies on the economic impact of business changes. He also is experienced in helping businesses in northern Ohio develop value-added products to adapt to changes in demand.

Dr. Thom Swanke, assistant professor of economics at Chadron State and a friend of Carroll’s, believes some of Carroll’s ideas may be useful in the beef business in the region.

“Most of the growth in economic development is the result of someone making adjustments or coming up with a new idea for a product that increases the demand,” said Swanke. The idea is to create something that will stimulate demand. I think we’ll be impressed with what Dr. Carroll has seen and helped accomplish. We may be able to adopt some of his ideas in this area.”

The presentation will be part of Chadron State’s Vision 2011, or centennial, initiative.
